Our souls are caverns we easily neglect.
Like the walls of a well, when we fail to maintain our inner lives, we become muddied and eventually cave in with stress and neglect.
But soul-care can feel painful and complicated from years of unattended sludge—so we sometimes ignore clearing out our souls and filling them with truth and grace. We scroll our screens. We burry ourselves in work. We pour our energy into loved ones.
We can find every excuse to not have time to care for the wellness of our being—I know. I’ve been there. And at the end of the day, I laid my head down with the swirling and sinking feeling that I was failing—failing life, failing God, failing my loves ones.
And I decided I didn’t want to live that way anymore. I wanted wholeness from the depth of my essence, my soul, my total inner being. And I set out on a quest, with my Lord Jesus, to understand what that even looks like.
I’m still on the journey—and I invite you to journey with me on this blog and the Well Soul Podcast.
So far on my soul-quest for wholeness, I’ve discovered three foundational truths for us to have a well soul.
3 Foundational Truths for a Well Soul
1. Be Purified by a Relationship with Jesus.
The mud in our souls is caused by the contamination of our sin.
The purity of our souls, according to the Bible, begins in a right relationship with God (see Romans 3:23, 6:23). But we choose to live life on our own terms, rather than God’s.
We are not far from the Garden of Rebellion, where Adam and Eve chose to turn from following their Maker, to following their own ideas of what is good (see Genesis 3).
In order to have a well soul, an inner life that experiences peace and wholeness, we need the forgiveness available through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We need salvation from our sin.
Have you ever welcomed Jesus into your life and accepted His free gift of salvation?
If not—you can pray right now, confess your sin and turn to Him in faith for your salvation.

2. Drink in Scripture Regularly.
A well soul drinks from the Well of Living Water regularly—the truth found in the Scriptures in the 66 books of the Bible. Scripture meditation and reflection is how we fill ourselves with the nourishment our souls need to grow in wholeness (see 2 Timothy 3:16–17).
We are constantly saturated with false truth like sewage refuse labeled as fresh mountain spring water. It can be so easy to ingest falsely labeled, make believe wisdom—but it’s refuse for the soul.
Sure, false truth feels good going down sometimes, but just like junk food, it can cause spiritual disease. We can only be well from the depths of our soul when we fill ourselves with the quality ingredients of the truth found in Jesus Christ and the teachings of God himself through the God-breathed words of Scripture.
This is our drinking water for a well soul.
“How sweet are your words to my taste sweeter than honey to my mouth.”
Psalm 119:103

3. Learn to Walk with Jesus Every Day.
Our source of continual wholeness is the Holy Spirit of God living inside of us, gifted to us when we repented and believed in the Gospel (see Acts 2:38).
But what does it look like to follow Jesus (follow the Spirit) as we make our morning eggs, attend a planning meeting on zoom, or sit down to sort through what feels like an Eiffel tower of laundry?
We take our advice from Scripture.
“But I say walk by the spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh for the desires of the flesh is against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh for these are in opposition to one. In order to keep you from doing whatever you want. But if you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law.
Galatians 5:16-18, NIV
In other words, we don’t follow some checklist of “goodness”, we learn to listen to the promptings of the Spirit inside of us—and He reminds us of the Scriptures we drink in regularly—and empowers us to follow Jesus, moment-by-moment, day-by-day.
